Checked Bag Screening (CBS) Sydney Airport

Australia

Project Overview

In early 2005 Siemens was awarded the design and construct contract for the supply and installation of checked bag screening (CBS) at Sydney Airport Terminals 1 and 2. The CBS contract was awarded in response to the Australian Government’s requirements for 100% checked bag screening.

100% checked bag screening involves screening every bag to ensure that any bag containing explosives is detected and not placed in the hold of an aircraft. On the recommendation of Sydney Airport Corporation, Siemens engaged TBH to handle the programming aspects of the project.

The project involved the design and installation of checked bag screening including the associated baggage handling system and building works for Sydney Airport Terminals 1 and 2.

TBH’s Role

Initially TBH set up the programming structure for the CBS project, including design, fabrication, deliveries, installation, commissioning, construction works, and inter-phases with existing works and operations.

TBH then had an ongoing role to prepare detailed programmes, monitor progress and prepare progress reports. and TBH also assisted Siemens in the subsequent preparation of cashflows.

The construction component of this project had to be achieved without disruption to the existing bag screening process and with minimal disruption to airport operations.
