Centenary Hospital for Women and Children

Project Overview

The $97 million Centenary Hospital was one of the first major clinical capital developments in the redevelopment of Canberra Hospital’s health and support services. The development included expanded facilities and e-health clinical information and servicing technology.

Construction was conducted in two stages. Stage one involved an extension to the existing maternity building and stage two involved a major refurbishment of the existing building.

The three-storey hospital facilitated the co-location of services, including paediatrics at the Canberra Hospital (PatCH), maternity services, neonatal intensive care unit, gynaecology and foetal medicine and specialised outpatient services.

TBH’s Role

TBH’s role began in the second phase of construction and included a critical review of the current master and site programmes by assessing high-level logic; activity durations; compliance with contract requirements; project milestones; working day calendar and delay contingency; critical path analysis; activity sequencing; float, constraints and resourcing.

TBH also conducted a review of programming methods and practices in relation to:

• Status updating/progress reporting frequency and method; tracking/assessment of variations and delays; contingency management /information extraction and reporting / communication to client, contractors and other stakeholders.
• After careful analysis TBH determined that the required outcomes could be met using a single programme thus reducing the administrative burden of maintaining two programmes.
• TBH provided on-going management of the programme by conducting status updates, programming of variations and tracking delays.
