SmartWays Project

Project Overview

The Smart Freeway initiative is one in a series of projects being delivered by Main Roads WA. Collectively, these projects will improve freeway capacity between Russell Road and the Narrows Bridge and deliver consistent travel time savings for road users. The Smart Ways project consists of the construction of an extra northbound lane on the Kwinana freeway which will utilise smart technology. Smart Freeways have been used successfully around the world and in other Australian cities to manage congestion, improve safety and get the most out of existing infrastructure. The Smart Freeway infrastructure will deliver enhanced lane-use management, variable speed limits and coordinated ramp signals to deliver safer and more efficient roads. The project is part of the Federal and State Government’s $2.3 billion ‘boosting jobs, busting congestion’ package of WA road and rail projects. The major contract was awarded to the SmartWays Alliance, consisting of BMD Constructions, Ventia and Arup.

 

TBH’s Role

TBH was engaged by BMD Construction to provide project planning and scheduling services throughout the duration of the Project. TBH were able to review and analyse weekly updates to identify critical and near critical paths, while assessing the key slippages compared to the baseline. The weekly schedule status updates also included reporting in order to capture current progress and sequence the works to completion.

As TBH specialises in Project Programming & Scheduling who have been involved in various types of projects, TBH was able to reassure that the programme aligned with industry standards and met the Contractor’s requirements. The Contractor also benefited from TBH’s skills and experiences by receiving ongoing planning support. This is as TBH was able to highlight areas of concern in the programme and provide recommendations to mitigate any potential delays to maintain the specified Practical Completion date. Furthermore, TBH was able to successfully provide its service throughout the whole project with onsite presence.
