Smart Grid Program

Australia

Project Overview

Central to Ausgrid’s Smart Grid initiative is the Smart Grid, Smart City (SGSC) program – a Commonwealth Government initiative to investigate at a commercial scale, the potential benefits associated with utilising smart grid technologies within the energy sector. The premise of the demonstration project was designed to gather information about the benefits and costs of different smart grid technologies in an Australian setting. This includes smart sensors, new back-end IT systems, smart meters and a communications network. Smart grids provide real time information about the electricity network to make it more efficient, reduce interruptions, support more renewable energy and provide households with greater control over their energy use.

The project included:

  • Roll out of smart meters to thousands of homes and Sydney, Newcastle and surrounding areas
  • Software design and development of a portal to provide energy usage information to customers
  • Roll out of WiMAX communication tower infrastructure and grid-side smart devices
  • Working with the Ausgrid consortium – EnergyAustralia, Landis and Gyr, GE Energy, Grid Net, IBM, CSIRO,TransGrid, Sydney Water, Hunter Water, the University of Newcastle, the University of Sydney, the City of Newcastleand Lake Macquarie City Council
