Project Overview

The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games brought one of the world’s largest multi-sport events to Victoria, showcasing the state’s capability and delivering a lasting legacy of urban and sporting infrastructure. Key components of the program included the redevelopment of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) with a new Northern Stand to enhance capacity and spectator experience, and the construction of the Athletes’ Village in Parkville to accommodate thousands of competitors and officials. Delivered under the leadership of the Victorian Government with delivery partners Australand, Grocon, and Alfasi Steel, the program required careful coordination to meet fixed deadlines in a live operational city environment.

TBH’s Role

  • Acting as programme and delivery advisor, developing and maintaining integrated schedules, advising on sequencing and mitigation of schedule risks.
  • Undertaking constructability and optioneering studies to assess alternative delivery options and resolve complex staging issues.
  • Providing delivery risk and value management advice, contract administration support, and recovery and mitigation programming to manage emerging risks and ensure on-time delivery.

Value Created

TBH’s involvement provided the Victorian Government and its contractors with an independent, evidence-based understanding of delivery risks and options. By aligning programme strategies with operational realities and legacy requirements, TBH helped ensure that the Games’ key venues and facilities were delivered to specification, on time, and in a way that maximised long-term value for the community and the state.
