Meet the Changemakers with Charbel El Hakim

What is your current role at TBH?

I am an Associate Director based in the Riyadh office, with over 15 years of extensive experience across a wide range of industries, including Building & Construction, Infrastructure, Mixed-Use, Residential, Hospitality, Medical, Entertainment, Rail, Oil & Gas, and major development programmes.

Why do you find these services and industries interesting?

Construction is the bedrock of our society, and we’re fortunate to be living in a time when it has become so grand and complex that it demands a global knowledge base, diverse expertise, and a wide range of skills to break down this intricate puzzle into safe and buildable solutions.
What fascinates me most is the challenge behind every piece of that puzzle, being part of the driving force behind complex analyses and investigations that result in well-defined outputs, ultimately leading to maintainable and sustainable outcomes that advance the industry.

What did you study, and what made you decide on a career in consulting and ultimately at TBH?

I hold a BEng in Mechanical Engineering from the American University of Beirut, an MSc in Construction Project Management from the University of Manchester, and an LLM in Construction Law and Arbitration from Robert Gordon University. I’m also a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK) and the Project Management Institute (USA).

While it’s often said that consulting is the school of expert advice, for me, it has always come as second nature. I naturally question assumptions, break down complexity, and seek straightforward, practical solutions.

What I find truly remarkable about this profession is being part of a community of specialists who provide expert advice, engage diverse stakeholders, and work collaboratively to solve problems and drive meaningful improvement. It’s a space that continuously pushes you to evolve by developing new skills across industries and functions, while leading by example and playing an active role in collaborative decision-making.

For me, TBH was, is, and always will be a no-brainer. Everything I value is embedded in its culture, and brought to life by exceptional people and leadership who consistently support, guide, and create opportunities for us to thrive.

What major projects have you worked on while at TBH?

Given the nature of our work, confidentiality is paramount and strictly upheld.

I’ve had the opportunity to work on several mega and giga projects and programmes across the region, spanning a wide range of industries. In each case, we’ve supported our clients in bringing these programmes to life, all while safeguarding the integrity of the project lifecycle and ensuring adherence to robust project management processes.

Our role often involves advising clients on best-practice approaches and contemporary methods of strategic planning across all phases of programme development and asset delivery. This includes master planning, permitting, contract structuring, design stages, procurement strategies, and construction methodologies.

We also represent clients in the preparation, negotiation, and defence of various types of claims and expert reports, through best-practice dispute resolution methodologies and construction law practices.

Tell us about a career highlight!

I believe that returning to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with TBH in 2022 has been a key milestone in my career, and one of the best decisions I’ve made.

It has since led to several professional highlights, including working on some of the world’s largest giga projects alongside impeccable clients and outstanding teams. It’s also provided an opportunity to showcase TBH’s capabilities in the region and contribute to raising the bar in project delivery.

Other notable milestones include completing my LLM in Construction Law and Arbitration while working full-time, speaking as a panelist at the Construction Intel Summit KSA, and being part of the team that won Sub-Consultancy of the Year in 2024.

In regard to your career, what are you passionate about?

I have a genuine passion for problem-solving and finding effective ways to present solutions that not only address challenges but also help others overcome theirs. I typically do this by developing avant-garde, live interactive scheduling and reporting tools and processes, integrating risk assessments and streamlining controls to ensure clients are fully informed and equipped to manage both prospective and retrospective implications, with appropriate mitigation measures in place.

I’m also deeply enthusiastic about software integration, including platforms such as SYNCHRO 4D, BIM, ArcGIS, Oracle EPPM, and others that enable advanced information management, and support better decision-making at the executive level.

What major innovations or industry trends are you most excited about?

I’ve always been fascinated by technological advancements, particularly their applications within the world of project management, from automation and visualization to optimization and, more recently, Artificial Intelligence.

While huge strides have already been made, I firmly believe the future of effective construction industry management lies in the integration of software platforms with AI and immersive technologies.

It may still be some way off, but perhaps Augmented Reality is next?

What difference are you hoping to make for TBH in the region you work in?

What we’re collectively striving for as a team is to uphold the TBH name at its highest in the region as one of the leading consultancies across planning, advisory services, dispute resolution, and beyond.

We’re also consistently and thoughtfully shaping our culture into one defined by diversity, proactivity, expertise, and collaboration, both within our team and in how we serve our clients.

We aim to continue making a meaningful difference in the successful delivery of mega and giga projects by tackling complexities, mitigating risks, and optimizing project performance, all while supporting Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and fostering long-term partnerships.
